30 Year Anniversary Celebration with Jim Scarrow

Did you know this year marks Microserve’s 30th anniversary?

It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come and how much we’ve grown along the way. To celebrate Microserve’s three decades of being in business, we’ll be posting a five-part blog series where we will introduce a few of our senior staff members and give you insight into Microserve, how it’s evolved, and how the evolution of the IT industry has allowed for this growth over the years.

Today we are introducing Jim Scarrow, our Director of Operations. Jim Scarrow has been at Microserve for 30 years, since the very beginning of our company! Here’s what he has to say!

1. What would you consider your life motto?

It’s okay to make mistakes as long as you learn from them.

2. What do you think is the key to success in the tech industry?

I think one key to success is definitely the ability to quickly adapt to the constant change in the industry.

3. What do you envision the future of technology to look like?

We all know technology is everywhere. Areas of interest for me are autonomous cars, solar power and batteries, robotics, 3D printing, and that ever-evolving Internet “thing”.

4. We all know that the tech industry has been changing a lot throughout the years… what do you think is the best way to ensure that Microserve is ready to meet the future challenges in the industry?

The year was 1987. The IBM Personal System 2 or PS/2 (not PlayStation II) was introduced and what a power house it was! At only $2,400, it had a super-fast 8MHz 8086 processer (yes MHz), 640 KB of RAM (yes KB), a 720KB Floppy Drive, and a 20MB Hard Drive (yes MB!). The operating system was DOS 3.3 and the monitor was a nice green monochrome CRT. The 16 color VGA adapter was an option and a bargain at only $1800. Working with this high tech equipment out of a small office on West 8th in Vancouver, with Spud (founder of Microserve) and two others is where I started at Microserve.

How have we made it to 30 years? One reason for success has been our ability to keep up with the technology itself. Whether it’s the latest hardware platform, the next generation of software, the Internet, consolidating a print fleet, the cloud or complying with government regulations, the technology has been in a state of constant change over the years. The manufacturers, producers and developers that drive innovation and change worldwide like to partner with Microserve, to pass on their latest and greatest advances. As a trusted advisor, we help our customers gain the knowledge early on, help in assessing where the technology fits in their organization and ready them to adopt the technology as it becomes available.

30 Years later… Jim Scarrow loves his new-generation laptops but the good old whiteboard is still Jim Scarrow’s favorite tool for brainstorming and mapping out ideas!
